The battery is for starting the car, or supplying power to systems before the engine turns over and starts spinning the alternator. If the alternator was bad, the battery would be drained quickly and the car would not run. Maybe for a short time if you charged the battery back up before starting it again. If there's an issue with the alternator not being able to keep the battery topped off, then it couldn't keep the car running either.
